What the Mobile Crane Inspector Certification Is
The Mobile Crane Inspector certification validates the knowledge and ability to inspect mobile cranes against the governing criteria — OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1412 (inspections) and 1926.1413 (wire rope), the safety-device and operational-aid rules (1926.1415 and 1926.1416), and the industry-consensus standard ASME B30.5. Inspectors do not operate the crane; they verify it is safe to place in service and document what they find.
The Inspector's Job vs. the Operator's Pre-Use Check
The operator performs a pre-use (frequent) inspection before each shift (1926.1412). The Mobile Crane Inspector performs the deeper, documented frequent and periodic inspections per the standard, evaluates deficiencies, and decides what stays in service versus what is tagged out. A common exam trap is assigning the operator's shift check to the inspector or vice versa — the inspector owns the documented program; the operator owns the daily go/no-go.

Inspection Frequencies — Initial, Frequent, Periodic
