How Ground Fails

What Causes Inadequate Capacity

What Resistance Means:

  • Stiff push = Acceptable (likely >3000 psf)
  • Cannot push = Excellent (rock or very firm soil)

Professional Soil Analysis

When Required:

  • Crane exceeding 100 tons

Outrigger Placement & Configuration

Proper Pad Contact

Critical Requirement: Outrigger pads MUST have full contact with ground. Any void = 100% failure risk.

How to Verify:

  1. Lower outriggers onto pads
  2. Check for gaps (wiggle test)
  3. Shim any gaps with steel plates
  4. Verify full contact across entire pad
  5. Tighten lock pins fully

Shimming Technique

When Shimming Is Required:

  • Any visible gap under pad
  • Uneven ground surface
  • Sloped terrain
  • Concrete with uneven surface

Proper Shimming:
