About the NCCCO Lift Director Certification
The NCCCO Lift Director — Mobile Cranes certification is one of the most comprehensive in the crane industry. To earn it, you must pass the Lift Director Core exam, the Lift Director Mobile Crane Specialty exam, AND the corresponding Mobile Crane Operator Core, TLL/TSS Specialty, LAT Specialty, and Rigger Level II exams.
The Specialty exam is scenario-based — you'll receive the official NCCCO load charts (Grove TLL + Manitowoc LBC) and must answer 15 questions involving load chart math, single-crane lift plans, and multi-crane (tandem) lift scenarios. The Core exam covers 40 questions across 6 domains including Site, Roles, Lifting Operations, Lift Plans, Rigging, and Signals.

Many candidates don't realize CCO requires passing the Mobile Crane Operator Core, TLL or TSS Specialty, LAT Specialty, AND Rigger Level II exams in addition to the Lift Director exams.
Critical Lift Threshold (75%–90% of Capacity)
A lift becomes 'critical' at different thresholds depending on the governing standard — know OSHA 1926 Subpart CC's definition vs. site-specific plans.
Pre-Lift Meeting Requirements
A pre-lift meeting is mandatory before every critical lift and personnel lift. Many test-takers confuse this with routine daily tailgate meetings.
Load Chart Hierarchy of Authority
The rated capacity on the load chart is the maximum — site conditions (wind, ground, geometry) often require you to use LESS than the chart allows.
Lift Director vs. Crane Operator Boundaries

When a jib is attached — even if not in use — the main boom capacity must be REDUCED by the published deduction weight in the load chart notes.
Wind Speed Affects Both Capacity and Operations
Operations must stop in high winds (typically 20–25 mph in-service). Wind load also affects the effective weight of large surface-area loads — often ignored on lift plans.
