Load Chart Basics

A load chart is a manufacturer's specification that shows the safe working load (SWL) capacity of a crane at different boom lengths and angles. Every crane operator must understand how to read their specific crane's load chart.

How to Read a Load Chart

Step 1: Determine Boom Length

Measure or confirm the boom length from the manufacturer's specifications. Standard lengths typically range from 40 to 200+ feet depending on crane type.

Step 2: Determine Boom Angle

Identify the angle at which the boom will be positioned for your lift. Angles typically range from 0° (horizontal) to 90° (vertical). Most charts show angles in 5° or 10° increments.

Step 3: Find the Intersection

Locate the row for your boom length and follow across to the column for your boom angle. The number at that intersection is your safe working load.

Step 4: Account for Load Weight

Weigh your load and any rigging equipment. The total weight must not exceed the SWL shown in the chart.
