Top 20 Missed
The Hardest NCCCO General Knowledge Questions — Where Operators Lose the Most Points
Why This Quiz Exists
We analyzed the most commonly missed questions on the NCCCO General Knowledge exam and packed the 20 hardest into this quiz. These are the questions that separate a passing score from a failing one — load chart deductions, power line contact procedures, personnel platform rules, partial outrigger extension, and the subtle differences between stability and structural limits.
Each question includes a "Need a Tip?" button if you get stuck — but use them wisely. The hints will guide you toward the right answer without giving it away. Score 90% or higher to earn the NCCCO Most Missed Master badge.
What's Usually Missed
Load Chart Deductions
Forgetting to subtract the block, hook, and rigging weight from gross capacity — or not knowing what 'net capacity' actually means.
Crane Leveling (1% Rule)
Load chart ratings are only valid when the crane is level within 1%. Many candidates miss this tight tolerance.
Power Line Contact Procedures
Staying in the cab vs. jumping — and when it's OK to exit. Electrocution is the #1 cause of operator death.
Partial Outrigger Extension
Without a manufacturer's intermediate chart, you must use the on-rubber chart — not assume on-outrigger capacity.
Bold Line on the Load Chart
Above the bold line = stability (tipping). Below = structural strength. Mixing these up costs points.
Personnel Platform Limits
Loaded platform must not exceed 50% of rated capacity. Riding the headache ball is NEVER permitted.
Stop Signal Authority
Anyone can give a stop signal — not just the appointed signal person. This trips up many candidates.
Boom Deflection
Under load the boom bends, increasing radius and pulling the load IN towards the crane — not away.
Duty Cycle Reduction
Most manufacturers require a 20% capacity reduction for continuous duty cycle operations like concrete skipping.
Two-Blocking & Dynamic Loads
Two-blocking causes structural damage; sudden starts/stops create dynamic loads that exceed rated capacity.
