Why Power Line Safety is Critical

Emergency: Crane Contacts a Power Line

⚠ CRITICAL SAFETY PROCEDURE — TESTED ON NCCCO EXAM

These are the OSHA-required steps when a crane makes contact with an energized power line. Every person on the jobsite must know these steps. Getting this wrong costs lives.

DO NOT MOVE THE EQUIPMENT

The operator must not move the crane or attempt to free it. Movement can worsen the contact and increase electrocution risk.

SIGNAL STOP — WARN EVERYONE AWAY

The signal person or any worker must signal an emergency stop. All ground personnel must immediately move away from the crane, load, and rigging — at least 50 feet away.

OPERATOR STAYS IN THE CAB

The operator must remain in the cab unless there is a fire. The cab provides a degree of electrical isolation. Exiting creates a path to ground and risk of electrocution.

CALL THE UTILITY COMPANY

Immediately call the utility company and 911. Only the utility can de-energize the line. Do not resume work until the utility confirms the line is de-energized and grounded.

IF FIRE — JUMP, DON'T STEP

If the operator must exit due to fire, they must JUMP clear of the equipment — both feet landing simultaneously — and then shuffle (feet together, sliding) or bunny-hop away. Never step normally; a stride bridges two ground-potential points and creates a fatal ground gradient current path.

How to Safely Leap from an Energized Crane

⚡ ONLY EXIT THE CAB IF FIRE IS PRESENT — otherwise stay inside

If you must exit a cab that is in contact with an energized line due to fire, the technique you use determines whether you live or die. OSHA mandates this specific procedure.

Jump clear

Leap out and away from the crane so no part of your body touches the crane and the ground simultaneously. This breaks the circuit.

Land with feet together

Both feet must land at the same time and on the same point to avoid a ground potential gradient between your feet.

Shuffle or bunny-hop away

Once clear, keep your feet together and shuffle or hop away from the crane. Do NOT take normal strides — voltage gradient between your feet can be lethal.

Do not touch the crane

After jumping, never touch the crane again. Even if it looks safe, the line may still be energized.

Stay away until utility clears it

Only return after the utility company confirms the line has been de-energized and grounded.
